Tasting notes
The 2020 Domaine Chifflet Saint-Joseph is a powerful yet refined Syrah, offering a vivid expression of the Saint-Joseph appellation. The nose is marked by red berry aromas—notably cherry and raspberry—lifted by subtle oak nuances. On the palate, the wine shows round, supple tannins and a vibrant core of fruit, delivering both elegance and depth. Sourced from a one-hectare organically farmed estate perched high on the steep slopes of Saint-Joseph, the vines are worked by hand and horse, ensuring careful stewardship of the land. Each plot is vinified separately, then artfully blended to create a wine with freshness, character, and balance—a fine ambassador of its terroir.
About the Winery
Paul is the 3rd generation to maintain the family's hectare of vines. He is the first to bottle the production at the estate.
His father and grandfather sent everything to the cooperative winery.
The plots are vinified separately, aged in oak barrels and then blended. Paul is accompanied throughout the winemaking process by a former master of culture at Jean-Louis Chave. 2021 is Paul's first vintage. He produces a single cuvée of red Saint-Joseph.
It is an area of one hectare of vines spread over 4 plots on the heights of Saint-Joseph, in the hamlet of Verdelette. The hamlet dominates Saint-Jean-de-Muzols and overlooks the Rhone Valley, on the Ardeche side, opposite the Hermitage hill.
The vines grow among the cedars and the climate makes elegant wines full of freshness. The vines are worked organically without certification. The very significant slope means that they are worked by hand and the soil essentially by horse.
