Tasting notes

The 2012 Château Mouton Rothschild, a Premier Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac, is a wine of balance, vibrancy, and refined power, with graceful aging potential. It presents a deep, near-black hue with subtle, shimmering reflections.

The nose is complex and inviting, blending blackcurrant and crushed blackberry with layered aromas of cigar box, spice, and a hint of graphite. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with dense, velvety tannins and a core of cocoa, vanilla, and dark fruit. The wine finishes with seductive freshness, aromatic intensity, and a lingering mineral tension.

A beautifully composed Mouton that reflects both the house’s pedigree and the distinctive elegance of the 2012 vintage.

Expert Ratings

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 96/100

"Tasted at the Mouton-Rothschild vertical in London, the 2012 Mouton-Rothschild clearly has the upper hand over the 2011, if not quite at the level of the 2009, 2010 and what I envisage will be the 2015. There is obviously greater fruit intensity here, as if the contrast has been dialed up a couple of notches. It is quite showy on the nose, preening in its infancy with pure black cherries, graphite and hints of cold slate-like scents, later that hint of seaweed I observed when tasted blind a few months earlier. The palate is beautifully balanced with great vim and vigor. This is a Mouton that will not be put down - vivacious, vivid and delineated with wonderful focus and crucially, impressive persistence on the finish. Do not underestimate this Mouton-Rothschild, because I can see an upswing as it matures in bottle. Tasted April 2016." Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

More About The Winery

Purchased in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, Château Mouton Rothschild rose to global fame under the visionary leadership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who took charge in 1922. His ambition and innovation forged Mouton’s unique identity, transforming it into one of the most celebrated First Growths (Premier Grand Cru Classé 1973) in Bordeaux.

A defining moment came in 1945, when to celebrate the end of World War II, Baron Philippe commissioned the now-iconic “V for Victory” label. Since then, every vintage has featured a label designed by a world-renowned artist — from Picasso to Warhol — making Mouton Rothschild not only a fine wine but also a collectible work of art.

Located in the heart of Pauillac, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, the estate spans some of the region’s finest gravel terroirs, planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The wines are admired for their power, opulence, and extraordinary ageing potential, ranking among the greatest in the world.
