Wine Region: Burgundy - France
Grape: 100% Chardonnay.
Tasting notes:
93-95 points Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): "Mid lemon colour. The bouquet is more backward but shows very promising density. Really intense in all departments for the vintage, surprisingly high acidity but the 2021 Cailleret has the mineral intensity of the vintage. Major potential here. Drink from 2027-2035. (Oct 2022)"
93-95 points Neal Martin (Vinous): "The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a perfumed, mineral-driven nose that is one of the best amongst de Montille's whites: tensile and brimming with vivacity. The palate is taut and fresh on the entry, lime and grapefruit merging into slightly more tropical fruit towards the finish, but the tension is here throughout. This is a triumph given the season. Drink: 2025-2045. (Jan 2023)"
94 points Charles Curtis, MW (Decanter): "This wine was among my favorites in the de Montille tasting, with piercingly lovely aromas of lemon peel, flint, spice on the initial attack, impressive concentration, and a delicate balance between tension and density on the palate that lead to a lingering finish. The protected location of the 0.85-hectare de Montille parcel touching Montrachet ensured that there was comparatively little damage from the frost here, and the quality comes through in the glass. Drinking Window: 2025-2040. (Nov 2022)"
94 points Christy Canterbury, MW (TimAtkin.com): "Bracingly stony and intense with yellow plums and grapefruit, there's a hint of toasty leesiness, too. A light, calcareous tug tightens up the palate on the crisply dry and very long finish. Etienne calls this a "Grand Premier Cru" for its regal structure and placement just below Chevalier and next to Le Montrachet. (2023)"
91-94 points/'Outstanding,' Allen Meadows (Burghound): "(from a .85 ha parcel purchased in late 1992). This is aromatically similar to the Folatières though with a broader array of elegant and wonderfully pure floral elements. There is first-rate volume and mid-palate density to the refined yet seriously punchy middleweight flavors that are like rolling tiny rocks around the mouth on the clean and equally long finale. This will need to develop better depth, but the balance and underlying material appear to be present for that to occur. Drink: 2031+. (Jun 2023)"
About the Winery:After being founded in the 1750s, in the mid-18th century, the Domaine de Montille century extended over 12 hectares. The family's financial problems meant that Etienne de Montille, the manager at that time, had to abandon certain parcels of land and focus on 3 hectares, mainly in Volnay. With the arrival of Hubert de Montille, Etienne's grandson, the domaine took off in another direction. Like his father, Hubert was a lawyer, however he would go on to lead a double life as a wine grower and a lawyer. He decided to produce his own wines from A to Z. Within a few decades, he would become one of the finest examples in the region, perfectly expressing the terroir of each climat with pure and elegant wines.
Today, the domaine is managed by Etienne and Alix de Montille, Hubert's children who also were originally steered towards a legal career. The domaine now has 20 hectares of vines, including 15 of grand and premier crus, on the best climats of Burgundy, in white and red! Domaine de Montille now produces its wines using biodynamic methodology, perpetuating the tradition of innovation and excellence introduced by Hubert de Montille. Etienne and Alix also created a mini trading structure, Maison Deux Montille Soeur Frère.
