Tasting notes
The 2022 Santenay “Champs Claude – Vieilles Vignes” from Domaine Muzard is an organically farmed Pinot Noir that captures the soulful, earthy side of the southern Santenay. Drawn from old vines (50–70 years), it opens with vibrant notes of red cherry and raspberry layered with rose petals, subtle spice, and a gently plummy undertone. The palate is focused and energetic, framed by fine, firm tannins and a stony freshness that carries through to a long, precise finish. A serious, terroir-driven Santenay with both depth and lift, built to drink beautifully now and evolve gracefully.
Expert Ratings
‘This is a big cuvée, from a foudre of 12 barrels dimension plus 17 actual barrels. And it is a good one! A slightly darker purple, with a beautiful bouquet, the darker side of raspberries, this is really very harmonious on the palate, still with its welcome point of acidity, juicy and racy together. Drink from 2026-2031.’ - Jasper Morris
More About The Winey
With a history dating back to 1645, the Muzard family has cultivated vines in Santenay for nine generations. The estate was formally structured in the 1960s by Lucien Muzard, who expanded holdings through rentals and acquisitions. Today, the domaine is run by Claude and Hervé Muzard, who manage 16 hectares of vineyards across Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Pommard, with around 5% dedicated to white wines.
The domaine balances traditional methods — manual harvests, careful destemming, and oak ageing — with modern precision, including small-crate harvesting, sorting tables, and temperature-controlled fermentations. Ageing takes place in oak barrels, with 30–40% new oak depending on the vintage, bringing both structure and finesse.
The wines of Domaine Lucien Muzard are admired for their authentic expression of Burgundy terroir, from the supple, approachable reds of Santenay to the more structured and age-worthy cuvées from Chassagne and Pommard.
